︎︎︎Note

‘The Tears,’ composed during the summer of 2010, consists of seven loose pages to be played in any order, chosen by the performers. The score uses bars of specific duration (specified in seconds at the top of each page) but eschews subdivision in favour of a freer, more natural rhythm notation that is spatially oriented. The idea, then, is that the performers should be able to enjoy a higher degree of freedom in terms of when to do things, but to retain rather specifically how to do them.

The sections are numbered 1-7 and have the following durations:

1 - 0’42” 2 - 1’24” 3 - 1’24” 4 - 0’35” 5 - 0’54” 6 - 1’44” 7 - 1’12”

(The time elapsed should be written in the score at the start of each new section once a playing order has been agreed on.)

Let all pitches ring at the end of each section. Then, move to the next section with a minimum of noise and without breaking the mood. Page turns must be synchronised and as quiet as possible.
