In 2018, I wrote a work called ‘The Continuing Dream’ for piano and a large assortment of percussion instruments. A few years later, it occurred to me that if I cut sections with large and electronic instruments (tam-tam, concert bass drum, sampler) I might end up with a body of music predominantly for piano and vibraphone with a few auxiliary percussion instruments. This turned out to be the case. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the extracts worked as individual pieces and in sequence as a set. I decided to call this selection ‘Dream Extracts.’ There are ten pieces that can be played as a set in full or individually programmed if so desired. Some of the work’s properties, however, like the interconnectedness of materials across movements, will only be revealed in a full performance.
