Composed March-July 2010, “20 Maj” (the title is Swedish for “May 20”) was originally commissioned by and written for loadbang, a New York ensemble consisting of baritone, trumpet, trombone and bass clarinet. The present version of the piece differs only from the original in that it has been transposed so as to be playable by a string quartet. Beyond this practical change, the versions are ostensibly identical.
The work is a slow release of energy through the continuous respelling of six basic chords. The focal point of the work is this slow change, and the immediacy and impatience inherent in the fp attacks. All four instruments must be at a complete dynamic balance with each other.
